The
Geneva ACC represents about 50% of the Swiss airspace. The Swiss air
traffic is one of the most complex in Europe (mountains, crossing European traffic over the Swiss airspace, 70% is descending or climbing traffic, proximity of major airports around the country etc.).
Until
May 2000 the Geneva ACC (Skyguide) had 5 Regulation CWP's permanently dedicated
to handle the aircraft exit conditions for the overall ACC in addition to the standard Controller Working Position
(CWP's).
The Regulation was entirely "manually" managed via telephone between each CWP and the ACC coordinator. This resulted in a high stress level for those involved and was very time-consuming.
